Easy to Love

Minister Jacoby Hall,

It's beginning to sound a lot like Christmas! There are multiple advertisements constantly jockeying for our undivided attention and unspent dollars. Let's face it. We are officially in the Christmas season! But what does that really mean? If we listen to all the ads, we would definitely believe that this season was about gift giving, and oh yes; lots of gift getting. I believe, however, that there is a different approach to understanding this season that we would be wise to consider.

A song writer penned a very significant song that simply states" the Jesus in me loves the Jesus in you. You're easy to love." Hardly anyone would debate the fact that Christmas started out as a Christian holiday. However, because of the emphasis that our society has placed on material goods, our focus has turned away from the real meaning of this season. If we had to use one word to describe the reason that this season is even worth talking about, it would be LOVE.

You see, love was the reason the sovereign creator and ruler of the universe divested himself of his royal robes and took on the lowly, limited form of a man. Because love came down, we choose a day to commemorate and celebrate with gladness this unselfish, loving act. Still, there are some who take the " materialistic bah humbug" approach to Christmas. That attitude seems so be prevalent all around us. Well, I submit to you that some only have this attitude because they are still not convinced that Jesus was ever born. So, He certainly couldn't have been born in their hearts. I believe the ones of us who truly enjoy this season do so because we carry the real reason for this season on the inside.

It is impossible to love without Jesus. Because of our naturally fallen state, it is not even possible for us to conceptualize the meaning of true love. We are told in the scriptures that “God is Love.”Because of this, when we love, we do so because the Jesus inside of us enables us to love others. So, when we celebrate this season in all its splendor, we are celebrating the love of God that caused him to be born in a manger, and subsequently in our hearts. Therefore, when two passing strangers wish each other a merry Christmas, they are really saying “The Jesus in me loves the Jesus in you; you're easy to love.”

Verse to Remember

“ if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. ” - 2 Chronicles 7:14 (NIV)
